Co-op set to expand food retail sector

Co-operative Group is to double the size of its acquisitions teams as part of its store expansion plan.

Having previously announced that it would add at least 300 new stores during the next three years, the retailer confirmed that expansion plans will include a renewed focus on new stores in city centre locations.

Stuart Hookins, The Co-operative Food’s head of portfolio said: “We are looking to recruit more people and to expand right across the country but, in particular, we have identified city centres as offering great opportunities for us.” Co-operative Group bought the Somerfield supermarket chain in March 2009, adding around 800 stores to its portfolio.
