Supermarket shake-up

The Office of Fair Trading has given the green light to two major supermarket moves.

The resulting changes of owner giving hope for a spur in refrigeration remodelling or upgrade work.

The OFT last month gave clearance to Tesco subsidiary One Stop taking over 76 stores from the Mills Group, bringing a portfolio of convenience stores from the Midlands and South Wales to the North East and bringing its national total to 597 One Stops.

At the end of March, the OFT gave final approval to Asda’s takeover of Netto in the UK, after accepting Asda’s undertakings to dispose of 47 stores. This leaves Asda with 147 stores, which it is expected to rebrand as Asda Supermarkets. The purchasers of the stores comprise Morrisons, Iceland and Haldanes which will rebrand them as its new Ugo stores.

Also, at the end of February, the Co-operative put 40 of its convenience stores up for sale.
