Superbly dark Australian crime drama, without a “G’day” in sight
There maybe no such thing as perfect family, however the 2010 film Animal Kingdom, recently released on DVD, shows that things could be much worse for the average clan.
Set in Melbourne, Australia at a time when crime rates, from both cops and robbers, were hitting unprecidented levels, it focuses on a family of criminals, lovingly overseen by a rather too familair mother (oscar nominated Jacki Weaver).
The inevitable implosion is sparked by the arrival of a nephew, following the death of his mother, who is subsequantlly dragged down into the family ethos. As the title suggests, the the pack is destined to turn on itself, with little concern for loyalties and codes.
The acting is right on point, with a chilling, Goodfellas Joe Pesci-esque, turn by Ben Mendelsohn, and is backed by a script and direction that crackles with purpose and dark intent right to the bitter end
