There are tough guys, and then there’s Marvelous Marvin Hagler - a man so fearsome he’d scare the dark
Any man who changes his name by deed pole to ‘Marvelous’ definitely has faith in his ability, and Marvin Hagler had plenty of that, enough in fact to remain the undisputed middle-weight champ between 1980 and 1987. Add to this the distinction of having the highest KO per cent of all middleweight champions - at 78 per cent - and you start to get the picture.
But what raises this man’s stature even higher is that his era was also patrolled by the likes of Roberto ‘The Hand’s of Stone’ Duran, Tommy ‘The Hit Man’ Hearns - which he took on and beat in classic encounters - and his ultimate nemisis ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard, who ended his rein in a controversial points decision.
But the thing with Marvin was that his work was never fanciful, but gritty and determined. A street fighter who closed down and released those muscular bombs with deadly intent, with that bald head only adding to the aura. For reference of this genuine ‘fighter’s fighter’, check out his vicious encounter with Tommy Hearns, which has the distinction of including ‘the greatest first round in boxing history’.
