Editor's comment: "Cooling Awards play to industry’s strengths"

The awards demonstrate the industry’s unquenchable appetite for innovation – and now it’s judging time

Mid-year marks a midpoint for us too, as we close the doors on entries to the Cooling Awards and get ready to start the judging process.

Once again we have had clear demonstration of what I shall now call the Cooling Principle of Brinkmanship: at the originally advertised deadline, we had the princely sum of 18 entries. It would have made for a short evening on 23 September.

If I tell you that in the last two days of the extended deadline alone, we saw 60 entries come in, you will know the way the Principle works.

Is this an insight into the way the industry works or merely human nature?

I am sure that all those who have to work up a contract bid will have a view.

The judging process enters a new phase this year, as we introduce face-to-face presentations for finalists for the first time.

It is an exciting development.

Firstly, we have recruited 51, yes 51 judges, to hear the ‘pitches’, which has been a great opportunity to involve industry heavyweights from even more specialisms in the process.

Some judges have already been caught studying the gruelling interview stage of The Apprentice as preparation.

For my part, I will have a small wager on the number of times I see entry titles zipping in dropping in letter by letter from the top of the screen.

But seriously, I think it will play to the industry’s strengths.

We all know that cooling people love to talk, and pitching for contracts, or persuading of the benefits of a product, is part of the day-to-day fabric of working life – some salesmen are very proud of their advanced PowerPoint skills – for the high-fliers, their Prezi toolbox.

One thing is certain – it presents an opportunity for the shortlisted candidates to lift their entries beyond the printed page, not only explaining the project or product, but expressing their passion for it too – and to really ‘sell the sizzle’.

Anyone who has attended a Cooling Awards will know how they demonstrate the industry’s unquenchable appetite for innovation.

Although this year has not been easy for many – the supermarkets are facing competitive challenges and building services is still dealing with the lag from the construction recession – the volume of entries is consistently high.

Innovation is a thread running through the rest of the magazine.

On p36 of RAC June we focus on the R&D centre opened by GEA Searle, surely set to become a global centre of excellence for heat exchange. We are pleased to welcome them as one of our new Cooling Awards sponsors this year.

They are joined by chiller specialist Klima-Therm – two companies characterised by their desire to push the boundaries of energy efficient cooling.

The Cooling Awards shortlist will be published online on 19 June, so good luck to all of you who get on it.

But take a lesson from the Cooling Principle of Brinkmanship and don’t leave those presentations to the night before.
