EcoMESH claims its technology eliminates the need for water reservoirs in cooling towers by harnessing the adiabatic process
Evaporative cooling is a fundamentally natural and energy-efficient method of cooling – for the simplest of illustrations, it’s the chilling effect you feel when you come out of a swimming pool and a breeze blows across your body, caused by the accelerated evaporation process of the water drying.
And in the same vein, large heat rejection systems use cooling towers or evaporative coolers in order to achieve lower condensing temperatures, and reduce overall energy consumption. However, although this technology is effective when run efficiently, it does have several potential flaws.
The heavy reliance on cooling towers requires higher levels of maintenance. If this maintenance fails to be implemented correctly, then major health issues such as legionella bacteria can develop – an outbreak of legionnaires’ disease can have a potentially life-threatening effect on the health of not just people in the immediate vicinity, but also the wider population.
It is with these issues in mind that EcoMESH developed its patented technology. This concept uses non-metallic wired mesh panels to cool the air stream, which, in turn, establishes an adiabatic cooling effect. This effect is maintained via intermittently spraying water over a wired mesh surface (see diagram, right).
A software-driven controller initiates the water spray operation based on the ambient temperature. As soon as the water spray request is received, the controller initiates an in-line solenoid valve to spray the water onto the mesh and attain the adiabatic cooling process. This intermittent spray provides several benefits (see box, below).
The sprayed water rapidly and efficiently evaporates on a large mesh surface, which, as a result, completely eliminates the need for water reservoirs – a feature closely associated with many cooling towers.
The major benefit of this is that the health risks associated with legionella and its formation within still water reservoirs are completely removed, as EcoMESH is based on the total waste principle.
The meshes can be fitted either horizontally or vertically, on any inclined position in front of a heat rejection unit. A simple bracket supports the wire mesh on the unit, while several clips ensure the meshes remain away from the surface by hooking onto any existing or new air-cooled heat rejection surface.
Simple to fit
It is this simplicity in design that makes EcoMESH easily retrofittable to any existing heat rejection system. The technology itself can be supplied as a self-installed commercial DIY kit, and has the potential to be bought over the counter and fitted by the end-user, requiring no technical skill – just a simple installation guide.
