29-year-old Aimee Johnson is already proving her worth for the Essex conttractor as one of the small band of female apprentices in the industry

Maldon, Essex cooling contractor Delta T says it is alreay reaping the benefits of having its first female refrigeration apprentice. Having Aimee Johnson, 29 of Tillingham, on the tools has enabled the contractor to perform maintenance on leisure centre jobs without having to close the female changing rooms, as is usually the case with male colleagues.

The company also says: “We have also found that residential homes feel much more comfortable having a female engineer present.”.

Delta T said it is in discussions with the Colchester Institute over a partnerhsip offering the air conditioning and refrigeration apprenticeship alongside commercial experience on the job.

The firm said: “Air conditioning and refrigeration is a career to be proud of and we are keen for this appointment to break down barriers and social stereotypes. Our industry is welcoming to both female and male engineers of all ages and backgrounds. We hope that other companies will embrace this movement and follow in our footsteps, giving keen female candicates a chance to learn a trade, expand their knowledge and build upon a promising career.”
