British Gas acquires heat pump company

British Gas has acquired heat pump installation company Cool Planet Technologies for £0.5m, in further signs that the industry is anticipating increased demand via the forthcoming Renewable Heat Incentive scheme (RHI), available from mid-2011.

The company sells and installs ground and air source heat pumps to customers, and acts as a subcontractor for larger projects, in both the commercial and public sector.

Jon Kimber, British Gas New Energy managing director, says: “This acquisition delivers further on our strategy of developing a broad range of low carbon technologies and advice that we can offer our customers, helping them to use less and use cleaner energy.”

Mr Kimber, added that the company is currently employing a ‘wait-and-see’ policy regarding plans for the market, however he identified residential and commercial new builds as having the most potential, together with social housing.

Demand for heat pumps, via the RHI scheme, is predicted to increase to 20,000 units per year by 2012.
