Site uses rainwater harvesting for refrigeration
The Co-operative Group has opened a £15 million distribution depot at Birtley, Northumberland, which incorporates a wealth of energy efficient features including the harvesting of rainwater for refrigeration.
More than 550 staff are employed at the 280,000 sq ft site, including drivers, warehouse operatives and vehicle maintenance staff, who will pick orders for distribution to 260 Co-operative food stores across the north.
Products at the Composite Distribution Centre can be stored at a range of temperatures – from frozen to ambient.
In addition to rainwater harvesting, the new building incorporates energy-efficient features such as office lighting triggered by movement and which has daylight-dimming to lower brightness depending on the level of light during the day.
The site has received an “A” rating Energy Performance Certificate from the Government; A is equated to being the most energy efficient on a sliding scale of A to G.
