Toshiba Carrier invests in European manufacturing base

Company to begin operations at new manufacturing site in Poland from the end of 2020 to drive innovation and meet regional demand for energy efficient air conditioning products

The joint venture between Toshiba and Carrier will establish a new facility in Poland, therefore establishing a manufacturing presence in Europe to meet demand for air conditioning equipment and heat pump technology.

An investment of 3 billion Japanese yen (£21m) will be made to support efforts to expand the presence of the group in the region. Operation of the new site, based in the city of Gniezno in Poland, is expected to commence at the end of 2020.

Toshiba Carrier group said, “The new manufacturing facility will allow Toshiba Carrier to reduce product lead time by one-third, reduce product cost, and bolster its product line-up catering to particular needs in Europe.”

The joint venture told RAC magazine that a key objective of its formation as a company was to manufacture more energy efficient, commercial air conditioning products and heating and hot water solutions regionally.

David Dunn, managing director of sales for Toshiba Carrier UK, added that the investment was intended to support innovation for HVACR offerings.

He said, “The European market is a key growth driver for Toshiba Carrier. Having a factory on our doorstep so close to our customers will mean more influence on ensuring our future offering meets and exceeds UK and European customer expectations and industry requirements.”

The company pointed to a surge in European demand for heat pumps and air to water HVAC equipment, driven by interest in alternatives to gas boilers, as another major factor in its investment decision.

The establishment of a production site in Poland builds on a global strategy by Toshiba Carrier to boost its manufacturing and research and development capabilities. This includes work to relocate and expand the group’s air conditioning manufacture operations in Hangzhou, China.
