Weatherite's Tom Tycer wins RAC Magazine Student of the Year Award

10 individuals shortlisted for this year’s award, which looks for emerging engineering talent in collaboration with the Institute of Refrigeration

Tom Tycer from Weatherite Air Conditioning has taken the top prize at this year’s RAC Magazine Student of the Year Award, which is ran in collaboration with the Institute of Refrigeration (IOC).

Mr Tycer, who studied at the Chillair Training Academy, took the gold prize for the award that seeks to recognise the best up and coming talent in cooling system engineering.

The Silver prize was awarded to Lewis Edwards of HR Services, who also studied at the Chillair Training Academy. Charlie Roper of JD Cooling Systems, who studied at Grimsby Institute of Further Education, took home this year’s bronze prize.

Roger Borer, chair of this year’s judging panel, said that all candidates were required to provide details of their qualifications, experience, as well as evidence of their skills and work record. Entrants were also asked to provide tutor, customer and line manager references to support their applications.

“Each of these provided the judges with an insight into the students’ skill base, aptitude and knowledge,” he said.

Mr Borer said that entrants were also asked to explain why they believed they should win the award as part of a process of determining the best candidates.

“The judges looked for a combination of academic record and practical ability, along with examples of excellence, giving ‘over and above’ of what is expected and also any wider industry activity,” he added.

The prizes were given during the RAC Cooling Industry Awards 2017 at a ceremony held in Central London on September 27.

Shortly before the show, a reception was held for the ten finalists shortlisted for this year’s Student of the Year Award prize.
